    Case Hardening of Large Components
New facilitities enlarge the spectrum of services offered
In the beginning of July the Bochum Hardening Plant put into operation a new, particularly large protective-gas hardening furnace from IVA Dortmund and thus extended its range of services in the area of large, heat-treated components. This presents advantages and new opportunities especially for the manufacturers of highly stressed driving gears, shafts, and other machine components which are subject to a high degree of wear.

Due to restrictions in the size of ovens machine and equipment construction companies were often forced up until now to harden their components in several stages or parts: not only an unsatisfying means of construction but also a less than optimal method with regard to hardening results.

Now very large and very heavy individual components - some boasting lengths as large as 5,500mm by diameters as wide as 1,200mm - may be case-hardened using protective gas.

The crane, which feeds the oven, has a load-carrying capacity of 16t.

Treatments conducted with case-hardening oven are process-guided and their progress is in each case carefully documented. In addition the actual C-level is continually subjected by means of foil analyses to redundancy checks and the quality of the result is documented with the help of Vickers hardness tests performed on test-specimen.
