| An interview with Dr.-Ing. Günter Liebmann | |||
| The election of
Dr.-Ing. Günter Liebmann, company secretary of the
Weimar-based hardening plant Reese, to the board of the
most important committee responsible for heat treatment -
the "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Wärmebehandlung und
Werkstofftechnik e.V. (AWT)" (team
for heat treatment and materials application technology)
in German-speaking countries in October 1996 highlights
the fact that he is an acknowledged expert in the field
of heat treatment. In addition to this, he has been
appointed to the team "Härteverzüge"
(hardening distortions), which is part of the
"Forschungsvereinigung Antriebstechnik e.V. (FVA)" (research association for drive
engineering). This team comprises of renown university
teachers and leading members of the automotive and the
drive engineering industry. Dr. Liebmann, what do you think about your election to the AWT board? I consider the election as appreciation of the work of all colleagues from the new German federal states, where also - one should not misjudge this - outstanding work results in our field have been achieved. Examples are the short-term nitration, the works in the field of conversion and stabilization of residual austenite as well as the computer-aided inductive hardening of peripheral layers of screw spindles. Have there already been any contacts to experts from the Federal Republic before the wall came down? Official contacts were unwanted. However, there were possibilities to exchange ideas with colleagues from the West. - e.g.. at the regional technical conferences in Gera and Suhl, where speakers of the IWT Bremen or from the industry were always welcomed guests. Which special aims did you set yourself for your work in the AWT board? The possibilities to improve the product quality in an economic way by means of modern heat treatment techniques are not sufficiently known yet. The association wants to improve this by more intensive public relations, for instance. Here I can see the starting points for my collaboration, even in the new German federal states. "Getting the hardening warpage under control" is the title of an article in edition 1/96 of your customer information brochures. Are there any new introductions? Yes, when this topic is due to be treated fundamentally. We are now able to utilise the know-how of the hardening plant Reese for the AG Härteverzüge (hardening distortions) of the FVA. What is the long-term objective of this team? Under consideration of all requirements regarding manufacture and by means of computer-aided component analyses, predictions on material features and hardening distortions are intended to be made with the aim to achieve competitive edges regarding the construction of gearboxes. Important industrial enterprises, the AWT, the VDEh, the VDMA and several university institutes contribute to these developments. |
